FIT (Fecal Immunochemical Test) is the recommended screening test for colorectal cancer in people aged 50 to 74 who have an average (or normal) risk for getting the disease. You’re considered average risk if you have no personal or family history of polyps or colorectal cancer.
If you are average risk for getting colorectal cancer you should screen with FIT every year starting at age 50 and continuing to age 74. After age 74, the benefits may no longer outweigh the risks of screening and options should be discussed with your health care provider.
To order your free FIT kit you must:
If you are eligible for FIT you can order online or call AHS Screening Programs toll-free at 1-866-727-3926, Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.
*If you already have a lab requisition for a FIT please take this form to your nearest lab and pick up your FIT kit instead of ordering one online or by phone.

If you need help finding a family doctor:
Talk to your doctor or healthcare provider to see how your past medical history may affect you and which colorectal cancer screening test is right for you.
If you’ve had a first degree relative (biological parent, sibling, or child) diagnosed with colorectal cancer you may have a greater risk of getting colorectal cancer.
Talk to your doctor or healthcare provider to see how your family history may affect you and which colorectal cancer screening test is right for you.
Please talk to your doctor or healthcare provider about when you should have your next screening test. Getting screened regularly is the single most important thing you can do to protect yourself against colorectal cancer.
Although colonoscopy tests are very accurate, it is possible for polyps and even cancer to be missed. This is why it’s important to never ignore new bowel symptoms, like rectal bleeding or pain in your belly. See your doctor if you develop these or any other symptoms you’re worried about.
If your FIT result was normal, good news! You are currently up-to-date with screening and should continue to be screened with FIT every year. Please visit screeningforlife.ca again when it’s time to order your next FIT kit.
If your FIT result was abnormal, it’s important that you discuss your results with your healthcare provider. The recommended follow-up test after an abnormal FIT is a colonoscopy.
If you have questions or are not sure of your FIT result please speak to your doctor or healthcare provider.
